Police seek person of interest in Wash. shooting

PARKLAND, Wash. – A man with an extensive criminal past — whose 95-year prison sentence was commuted in Arkansas nearly a decade ago — was being sought Sunday as a "person of interest" in a deadly ambush on four police officers who were gunned down inside a coffee shop.

Pierce County sheriff's spokesman Ed Troyer told reporters that Maurice Clemmons, 37, was one of several people investigators want to talk to and that he could not be called a suspect at this point.

In a news release, the sheriff's office said Clemmons has an extensive violent criminal history from Arkansas, including aggravated robbery and theft. Clemmons also recently was arrested and charged in Pierce County in Washington state for third-degree assault on a police officer, and second-degree rape of a child.

In 1989, Clemmons, then 17, was convicted in Little Rock for aggravated robbery. He was paroled in 2000 after then-Gov. Mike Huckabee commuted Clemmons' 95-year prison sentence. Huckabee, who was criticized during his run for the Republican presidential nomination in 2008 for the number of clemencies and commutations he granted, cited Clemmons' age at the time of the sentence.

After his release from prison, Clemmons violated his parole and was returned to prison in July 2001. He was released March 18, 2004, according to the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette newspaper.

The four officers were with the 100-member police department of Lakewood, which adjoins the unincorporated area of Parkland, where the shootings took place. The city identified the victims as Sgt. Mark Renninger, 39; Ronald Owens, 37; Tina Griswold, 40; and Greg Richards 42.

Troyer said one of those officers fought with the gunman and may have wounded him before the officer died just outside the doorway. He told reporters that investigators were asking area medical providers to report any people wounded by gunshots.

Troyer said investigators believe two of the officers were shot dead while sitting in the shop, and a third was killed after standing up. The fourth apparently struggled with the gunman out the doorway and "gave up a good fight," getting off a few shots before he was either shot there or succumbed to earlier wounds.

"We believe there was a struggle, a commotion, a fight ... that he fought the guy all the way out the door," Troyer said.

He added, "We hope that he hit him."

Paranormal Activity

“Paranormal Activity,” a horror film now in limited release across the country, tells the story of a young couple who move into a typical suburban house but are soon disturbed by a supernatural entity that delights in scaring them in the middle of the night. The pair (one a skeptic and one a believer, in true “X-Files” fashion) use a video camera aimed at their bed to document the strange forces that disturb them when they are trying to sleep.

The micro-budget 2007 movie features a small cast of unknown actors. Much like “The Blair Witch Project,” to which the film is being compared, “Paranormal Activity” trades on its cinéma vérité realism, the conceit that you are seeing real documentary footage of what happened– scary scenes and all.

“Real” ghosts aside, the film is realistic in some ways.

The film’s tag line, “What happens when you sleep?” is especially appropriate. Ghosts, abducting aliens, and other mysterious entities are often experienced at home at night and in bed — not during your lunch hour while buying cat food and ground beef at the supermarket.

There’s a psychological reason why these experiences often happen at night: We are more likely to be tired, drowsy, and sleeping. Medications, and even simple fatigue, can create mild hallucinations, what psychologists call waking dreams and hypnagogic experiences. They are harmless and common (especially as we drift to sleep), but can impair our perceptions and create experiences that never happened.

For example, during one haunted house investigation I conducted in Buffalo, N.Y., a man told me that a ghost had kicked his bed as he fell asleep. He had no other explanation, and firmly believed he had been attacked by a ghost. My investigation revealed that the “kicking” he experienced was actually his leg twitching as his body entered the first stages of sleep. He was completely unaware of this, and when awoken by his leg spasm, he interpreted the jerk as a ghost kicking his bed.

Ghost hunting
The film is also realistic in its depiction of how people come to believe their house is haunted. For much of the film, the “paranormal activity” that the couple experience consists mostly of minor household disturbances: doors open on their own; pictures fall off the wall; lights turn on or off, etc.

While these things can seem mysterious, there may be perfectly rational explanations: breezes can slam doors, vibrations or soft drywall can send hung pictures crashing to the floor, electrical problems can turn lights on and off, and so on [My editor presently has a vexing problem with a newly installed, complexly wired fan/light in his home office that turns off mysteriously, but can be turned back on, in an otherwise ghost-free home].

Hoaxing is also a problem; many instances of “paranormal activity” have been traced to pranking children or troubled teenagers seeking attention.

Casing atasnya  coklat dengan corak garis melintang. Cemerlang, kendati tidak mengilap, dan yang penting, ogah mengumpulkan jejak sidik jari.  Seluruh badan notebook mini ini – begitu Toshiba menyebutnya – pun memikat, termasuk engsel yang membulat dan berlapis krom mengilat.  Sebuah tombol on/off berbentuk cincin hadir di tengah engsel tersebut.

Keyboard pada notebook mini generasi  kedua Toshiba ini cakep. Bukan hanya ukurannya yang lebar (diklaim 90%), tetapi juga karena adanya ruang pemisah di antara setiap tombol. Ditambah lagi, tombol-tombol  yang terbuat dari alumunium – bukan plastik - itu menyembul (raised) ke luar dari dasar panel, mengingatkan kami pada keyboard notebook Sony Vaio dan Mac.  Ditambah empuknya tekanannya, jadilah keyboard ini benar-benar mendukung kenikmatan menarikan jari-jemari, tidak terkecuali  bagi mereka yang jari-jarinya berukuran besar.  Sayang masih terdengar suara tak-tik saat tombol Spacebar ditekan.

Kami juga menyayangkan ketipisan huruf/icon di bagian bawah tombol-tombol Fungsi  (ESC, F1-F12, PRTSC, HOME, END),  yang digunakan untuk mengaktifkan antara lain Wi-Fi dan volume. Terlalu tipis sehingga agak sulit dilihat.  Namun touchpad-nya jempolan karena lebar dan responsif. Begitu juga kedua tombol klik di bawah touchpad yang mudah dijangkau.

Sesungguhnya, fasilitas dan kelengkapan Toshiba NB200 tidak terlalu beda dengan milik netbook lain:   Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g, Bluetooth, 3 port USB 2.0, port VGA-out, port LAN, slot SD/MMC, dan Webcam 1,3 megapixel. Bahkan slot kartu memorinya terbatas pada dua tipe kartu: SD/SDHC dan MMC. 

Yang istimewa justru port USB yang ada di sisi kiri.  Port yang juga diberi logo kilat  ini ternyata mendukung fungsi sleep-n-charge. Maksudnya, kendati netbook dalam kondisi mati/hibernate, perangkat berkoneksi  USB yang dicolokkan ke port ini tetap bisa diisi baterenya. Perangkat MP4 player Kingston kami misalnya, sukses diisi batere Li-Ion-nya saat netbook mati.

Memang di netbook-nya, Toshiba sangat memfasilitasi pengguna. Lihat saja tombol Caps Lock di sisi kiri. Berbeda dengan merek-merek lain yang menggunakan pendekatan software yang menampilkan indikator di layar, Toshiba langsung membenamkan LED indikator yang akan berwarna hijau begitu tombol Caps Lock ditekan. Fasilitas yang kecil dan sepele, tetapi menyenangkan.

Kemudahan lain adalah dikumpulkannya beberapa aplikasi pendukung dalam folder Toshiba. Contohnya ConfigFree untuk mempermudah pengaturan jaringan kabel/nirkabel misalnya. Ada juga Zooming untuk memperbesar tampilan di layar dengan kombinasi Fn+2. Yang unik adalah proteksi harddisk. Saat mendeteksi adanya guncangan, misalnya unit diangkat atau digoyang-goyang, Toshiba Head Protection langsung memarkir kepala (head) harddisk agar data di piringan yang sedang berputar tidak rusak/terkorupsi. Jika 3D Viewer diaktifkan, setiap kali unit terguncang, di layar akan ditampilkan simulasi pemarkiran head tersebut.

The Naked Truth

You don't have to be a perve to wish Kevin Sandler could flash a little more skin in his thought-provoking but doggedly academic treatment of the movie ratings system, "The Naked Truth." The Arizona professor is on to a genuinely fascinating topic that's as old as the Hollywood Hills. It has always seemed deliciously loony that the film industry attempts to keep score such that, as one vexed producer put it, "four fucks, two goddamns and one motherfucker is an R." Getting to the four-letter fun in this case doesn't require a parent or guardian, but rather a high tolerance for footnotes and second-hand sources.The author at least is not laboring under false pretenses. "'The Naked Truth' merely scratches the surface," he concedes, due to the imposing fact that little of the ratings process has ever been revealed through official channels. The number of authoritative accounts of the secret process by which movies have been evaluated and rated over the past 40 years can be counted on one hand.
Given that limited source pool, or presumably his own ability to go on sabbatical and follow Kirby Dick with a notebook, Sandler dutifully lays out a chronology dating back to before the Hays Code. Along the way, he tosses off some astounding facts. For instance, after Columbia's "Emmanuelle" in 1974 and United Artists' "Inserts" in 1976, MPAA signatories put out just two X-rated pics before 1990's "Henry & June," and both were Pasolini re-releases. After "Henry," only indies, specialty units or foreign distribs have attempted NC-17s, generally with limited return.
That de facto shut-down of the X rating, and the subsequent NC-17, are detailed in convincing fashion, and there are flashes of passion as Sandler assails the "cosmetic" changes to a broken ratings system. Too often, though, the writing is wonky and labored, with repeated references to full source citations and sources "remarking" and "observing" as if in a photo caption come to life.

Not bad, but nothing special either Mutant Chronicles finally makes its way to DVD, and despite some negative press surrounding it, the film as a whole isn't so bad at all. Taking place in the distant future where Earth is run by four warring corporations, a race of mutants is awakened and begins laying waste to everything and everyone in sight. Spiritual elder Brother Samuel (Ron "Hellboy" Perlman) thinks he knows how to lead humanity to salvation, so he gathers a crew of soldiers for a suicide mission. Most notably among them are Thomas Jane (The Mist, Hung) as rugged soldier Mitch Hunter, and Sin City's Devon Aoki; and they all make their descent to save the world. While Mutant Chronicles is capably directed and features CGI effects that range from halfway decent to Sci-Fi Channel (or is it ScyFy Channel now?) quality, the film's biggest flaw lies in its pacing. The first half of the film is sadly boring, but it does manage to pick itself up for the second half, and doesn't let go as the film races towards its conclusion. Jane and Perlman are good, and despite the dim lighting, there are some fairly decent action scenes to be found here. All in all, Mutant Chronicles isn't anything special in the least, but it is definitely worth a look for sci-fi/action fans at the very least. Solid B This was a decent sci fi/horror movie. Though a lower budget fare, it does boast a fair amount of talent in Perlman and Jane. Malkovich is more of a cameo. The story first takes place in the WWI style trenches of a war between 4 corporations who run the world in 2700. That is until a battle opened up a hidden chamber in the ground and the long imprisoned mutants escape and start taking over the world. The corporations must then unite and are lead underground on a mission by a holy man(Pearlman) to destroy the thing that is creating the mutants. It is a little Lord of the Rings meets Starship Troopers. You have the quest of motley adventurers and the never ending wave of mutants that ratchet up the gore factor of the movie. The lower budget shows a bit in the special effects as most of the blood and explosions look a bit fake. The story is a bit simplistic but it is fun escapist fare. I did like the dark tone of the ending. Quite the melange!

Steampunk, sci-fi, post-apocalyptic graphic novel, and computer role-playing-game dungeon crawl, all rolled into one.


I can't say I've ever seen that combination before.


Actually kind of enjoyable if you sit back and don't bother
analyzing anything you're watching. Purely escapist fare. Extremely
simply story line; no complexity or surprises anywhere (one of the
reasons I didn't rate it higher).

Joseph Le Tessier

French Post-impressionist painter
(1867-1949)

 

Born in Marseille, he shows, at a very early age, an innate faculty for the arts, favored in it by his mother, amateur of art and descendant of the sculptor Simon. However, his father, an established merchant, sees things otherwise. The paternal taste for profit obliges Joseph to study business in Lyon. Armed with the necessary diplomas, he immersed himself in the business. He will last ten years.

In 1900, he leaves his job. Delivered of a long time suppressed frustration, Le Tessier gives himself, body and soul, to painting. He is 33 years old; his future is still in front of him. He studies tirelessly works from the painters from Lyon, Carrand, Vernay, and Ravier. His first and last exhibition takes place in Lyon in 1911. It is a triumph.

Begin then for Le Tessier, his wife and their daughter Marthe, a long wandering that brings them, during World War I, in the Yonne, in Voutenay. The painter achieves there, numerous oils of small formats, all treated on the nabi model beloved of Emile Bernard and Paul Sérusier.

He arrives in Vincennes in 1925. Le Tessier discovers the art galleries of the capital and is enthusiastic about Vlamick, Modigliani, and Soutine. His daughter Marthe learns the etching process and the sale of her works helps the family to support misery.

In 1933, the Le Tessier family lands in the middle of the country in the south of Aisne. Noroy-sur-Ourcq is a small village perched on the heights, overlooking the valley of the Ourcq, and Jean Racine's native country. The material life of the Le Tessier organizes itself somehow.

For Le Tessier, Noroy will be the place of the accomplished miracle. His pictorial writing has finally arrived to maturity. Taken of an irrepressible vital impulse, the 66 years old painter suddenly asserts a radiant youth. It is the triumph, the explosion of colors, and a permanent firework! From morning till night, he walks the Orxois' paths, his painter's gear under the arm. He looks avidly at the surrounding nature: the curvaceous hills of the Orxois, wheat fields flooded with sun, the Marne valley quivering with light, still-life astounding of colorful lyricism…

The painter "with the illuminated" palette dies in July 1949, at the age of 82, leaving behind him more than six hundred paintings and not a penny… En 1952, three years after his death, a retrospective of his work takes place in Lyon. Unanimously, the art critics praise Le Tessier's uncommon genius.
